Birthday honours

Several vets and others who work with the profession were recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list this year, which was delayed due to Covid-19.

OBEs were awarded to chief vet for Wales Christianne Glossop and chief policy adviser at Compassion in World Farming Peter Stevenson.

Retired Isle of Mull vet James Wilson was awarded an MBE, while CEO of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate Peter Borriello was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath. Congratulations all!

Hopes dashed for post-Brexit welfare safeguards

A clause added to the Agriculture Bill that would have required food imports to meet the UK’s domestic standards from 1 January 2021 was voted down in the House of Commons on 12 October – to the dismay of many vets and farmers.

MPs voted down the amendment by 332 votes to 279. It had been added to the legislation by peers in the House of Lords who wanted post-Brexit safeguards to protect British farmers from competition from foreign producers governed by lower standards.
