RCVS discusses powers of interim suspension

The RCVS looks set to request new powers to temporarily suspend vets and vet nurses accused of some types of crimes after college registrar Eleanor Ferguson said there was ‘a wish and a desire’ to do so.

The potential move was discussed at RCVS council earlier this month and follows the conclusion in April of an unusual case involving a veterinary nurse, Georgina Bretman, who poisoned her dog in 2013.

The case took four years to come to court and a further one and a half years before it was heard by the college’s disciplinary committee (see VR, 1 June 2019, vol 184, p 662).
