NI’s costly bTB programme may need to change

Northern Ireland farmers are disincentivised from taking their rightful share of responsibility for eliminating bovine TB (bTB) because they receive compensation amounting to 100 per cent of the market value for any animal removed under the eradication programme.

That was the verdict delivered by the province’s top auditor in a report, Eradicating Bovine TB in Northern Ireland, released this week.

It branded efforts made by Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) to eradicate bTB ‘largely unsuccessful’, while at the same time revealing the extent of suspected bTB-related fraud.
