Vets should wake from their ‘slumber’ and do more to lead the shift towards sustainable food production.
That was the message from Ruth Clements, head of veterinary services at FAI Farms, to the BVA Congress last month.
She said vets should take ‘personal responsibility’ for addressing food sustainability – as vets, prescribers, influencers, citizens and ‘custodians of health’.
‘Most pertinent for us in our professional lives concerns the productivity and wastage in the global livestock supply chain and [we should use our] specialist knowledge to challenge the status quo and lead on welfare and sustainability issues,’ she said.
