Reviewing the bovine TB strategy

Defra has launched a review of the 25-year strategy in England designed to tackle tuberculosis in cattle and eliminate it by 2038.

It said badger culls are still a ‘necessary part of the strategy’, but it was important to take stock and consider how other elements, such as cattle vaccination and improved diagnostic tests, might be deployed or accelerated in later phases.

Bovine TB costs the taxpayer an estimated £100 million a year. Over the past year more than 30,000 infected cattle were slaughtered in England.
