As a practice manager of a small family-run independent practice, I, like many others, have found it increasingly difficult to recruit veterinary surgeons. It appears to be worse than ever in the north east of England, however, I have found consolation in that I am not the only local practice to be experiencing this.

I find the quantity and calibre of staff applying for vacancies has declined – even though we are assured year on year by the RCVS that there are more people qualifying than ever before. Where are they? In my experience I find the willingness to work out of hours has declined, as have people skills.
