No-one would put animal welfare in the sorted box. Far from it. As BVA identified last year, the UK has some 125 issues on its ‘to do’ list. But there is without question, an appetite and momentum for change.
Most obviously, we have an environment secretary who is proactive in this area as his record on legislative reform shows (mandatory CCTV in abattoirs, increased sentencing for animal cruelty offences and a ban on performing wild animals in circuses, to name a few).
Good work is also going on keeping this important issue high on the veterinary and policy agenda, where it needs to stay.
