New vet research hub at Aberystwyth to drive improvements in animal health

A new veterinary hub is to be developed at Aberystwyth University to drive forward research to protect both animal and human health.

Vet Hub 1 will cost £4.2 million and will consist of a fully equipped, high-specification laboratory and office spaces. Backed by £3 million from the European Regional Development Fund, it is expected to be fully operational by 2019.

Through the hub, researchers will work with industry to develop tests and vaccines that will help reduce losses in the livestock industry and improve animal health. In particular, they will develop solutions for animal-borne diseases that could pass to people. It is hoped this facility will lead to the further development of veterinary practices and other animal health care, as well as biotechnology, animal food manufacture and other allied industries.
