THE Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is to announce targets for antibiotic use in the different livestock sectors across the UK in the Autumn.
It is currently considering draft targets for the individual sectors – beef, dairy, eggs, fish, game, pigs, poultry meat and sheep – which have been put forward by a Targets Taskforce convened by the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA). This follows Defra’s decision to set an average target of 50 mg/kg across the UK livestock sector as a whole.
It is expected that individual sectors will finalise targets and timescales for achieving them before they are announced at RUMA’s conference in London on October 27.
