After 38 years in veterinary medicine, Gerard Rutteman left veterinary medicine and oncology to pursue a creative future as the visual artist Drager Meurtant.

Tell us about your veterinary career

In 1978, I became a DVM, and one year later started as a PhD student at Utrecht University. My research led to a PhD in 1988, with a thesis describing the endocrine background of canine mammary tumours.

Since then, research with many collaborators led to my contribution to about 130 scientific – veterinary and comparative oncological – publications.
