IN tribute to Ernest Victor Fawell (VR, January 28, 2017, vol 180, p 99), his daughter Elizabeth Furness writes: Ernest Fawell was born on January 16, 1926, in Coxhoe, Durham, a small mining community.

He attended Cornforth Lane School, Coxhoe, and Alderman Wraith Grammar School, Spennymoor. He then went on to the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College in Edinburgh in October 1943. During this time, he served in the Dick Vet Contingent of the Home Guard for two years until the end of the Second World War.

He qualified in December 1948 and became a junior assistant to Messrs Leslie and Clark at Skipton, West Yorkshire. …
