I WOULD like to comment on the letters from Richard Chamings and Joseph A. Woods on the subject of EU membership and animal health and welfare (VR, March 7, 2016, vol 178, pp 479-480).

Mr Chamings states that ‘many other countries, especially in eastern and southern Europe, ignore the [animal welfare] regulations’. This is not correct, as the most cursory reading of the inspection reports by the European Commission veterinary inspector will reveal.

He says that, at present, we pay about £6 billion per year into the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This is also wrong. We paid a net contribution to the EU budget of about £8 billion …
