FURTHER cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have been confirmed in France this month; however, the most recent cases have been caused by the H5N9 and H5N2 strains of avian influenza virus, and not the H5N1 strain responsible for an outbreak of HPAI in broiler chickens in November (VR, December 5, 2015, vol 177, p 557).
In reports to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the French authorities indicated that confirmation of the H5N9 and H5N2 strains of the virus represented the first time these strains had been recorded in France.
