IN tribute to Richard Douglas Franklin, (VR, August 22/29, 2015, vol 177 p 205), David Franklin writes: Doug Franklin, my father, was born on March 17, 1921, in Cubbington, near Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, the only child of a farmer. He spent most of his formative years at Bacon's End Farm, Coleshill, where his father and uncle farmed beef, cattle and vegetables, and showed shire horses.

His intensely happy memories of days at Coleshill Grammar School never left him, and we would hear not only of how he was head boy, captain of cricket and captain of hockey; but of how Mr Hammond's enthusiasm for English and Latin instilled in him a love of Shakespeare, Virgil and Chaucer, which he continued to quote until his dying day.
