The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Medical Research Council have awarded £1.58 million to researchers at the University of Cambridge for a project looking at the effects of antibiotic use on the entire population of gut flora, rather than just the bacteria causing disease. Mark Holmes, reader in microbial genomics and veterinary science, will lead the project, which aims to improve understanding of the evolution of antibiotic resistance to help make better choices about how to reduce the spread of resistance on farms.
