Puppy checking scheme

The Pet Industry Federation (PIF), the trade association for pet businesses, has created an audit for its puppy-selling members. The PIF Quality Assurance Standard for the Sale of Puppies in Pet Shops sets out defined and measurable criteria aimed at protecting the welfare of the puppies. The PIF says that the standard requires systematic checking and cross-checking of paperwork, premises and puppies to ensure that the puppies are at least eight weeks old, are sourced only from licensed UK breeders, and are microchipped, vaccinated and treated against fleas and worms.
