THE RCVS Council decided to allow veterinary surgeons to use the courtesy title ‘Dr’ at its meeting in London last week. Use of the title will be optional, and those who do use it must be careful not to mislead the public and should ensure that their use of ‘Dr’ does not imply or suggest that they hold a medical qualification or a PhD. The title will have to be used in conjunction with the veterinary surgeon's name and either the descriptor ‘veterinary surgeon’ or the postnominal letters ‘MRCVS’.
The decision followed a consultation with the profession and general public, which attracted more than 11,200 responses, most of which (11,161) were received via an online survey. The RCVS reports that, of the 10,813 people who answered …
