Hugh Boyd and Lawrence Smith write: We would like to express our personal appreciation for the life of our friend and colleague Robert Beck, who played an important role in both of our lives. Robbie and one of us (HB) finished our studies at Glasgow veterinary college in 1950. Robbie started in practice in Cornwall and over the following years moved steadily northwards, acquiring the experience and maturity to fit him for the demanding job of being the only veterinary surgeon for the Hebridean islands of Tiree and Coll to which he was appointed. People from the two islands have talked about the great contribution he made to the quality and practice of livestock farming and his quiet way of relaxing hurt and frightened animals. Mr Beck was very highly regarded in the community.
