IN tribute to Ian Alexander (‘Tim’) Cheyne (VR, February 23, 2013, vol 172, p 215), John Bowen writes: Tim Cheyne knew from an early age that he wanted to be a veterinary surgeon. He grew up in Essex, the son of a chemist and older brother to David. He was educated at Palmer's Endowed School in Gray's Thurrock. He was awarded a state scholarship and went to the veterinary college of his choice, the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in Camden Town.

While a student, Tim was an active member of the student council, arranging dances and other social events for fellow students. His sense of civic duty led him to becoming a special constable, called out to officiate on special occasions, sporting events and parades.
