IN tribute to Joseph Athol Fraser (VR, January 28, 2012, vol 170, p 106), Padraic Dixon and David Shannon write: Joe Fraser was born on May 16, 1928, and grew up first in Alloa and then in Tullibody, near Stirling. He was educated at Dollar Academy and then performed his National Service with the Black Watch regiment. In October 1949, he entered the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College in Edinburgh, where he studied for membership of the RCVS, graduating in the summer of l954. In the early l950s, the college was absorbed into the University of Edinburgh, with which it had already developed many links. This proved an excellent and forward-looking decision and led, among other changes, to the introduction of the BVM&S degree course. Students and staff of that era will remember the efforts that they successfully made to ensure that the name of William Dick was included in the title of the new school, namely the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.
