The derogation to the European rules governing pet travel that allows the UK to impose stricter rules on animals entering the country has already been extended twice and recently the EC proposed extending it once again, until December 2011. Delegates attending the BVA's Congress in Cardiff last week were told that this extension was likely to be the last and that the UK would be expected to fully harmonise its rules with the rest of the EU, unless a sound scientific case can be made for maintaining some of the current controls.
