The difficulties facing admissions committees and prospective students in the selection of veterinary undergraduates are described. An attempt is made to evaluate the current selection procedures which are based on the applicant's academic record and previous practical experience and on interview. A correlation is drawn between these factors and a student's subsequent performance. A number of alternative selection methods are discussed.
