PROBIOTICS are preparations from the culture of live microorganisms. They have been shown to have beneficial effects when used as growth promoters (Ferreira and others 2009) and as immunostimulants (Arenas and others 2009) in calves. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a probiotic preparation added to the mineral mix given to young cattle with regard to liveweight gain and serum cortisol concentration.

The study used 40 male Nelore cattle, approximately 18 months old, fed on Brachiaria brizantha under a rotational grazing system and divided into two experimental groups of 20 animals. Animals in the experimental group (probiotic group) were supplemented with 4.0 g/animal/day of probiotic (Proenzime; EMBRAUPEC), added to the mineral mix given to the cattle.
