Abattoir CCTV law comes into force
Legislation requiring all abattoirs in England to have CCTV came into force on 4 May.
The requirement follows a consultation by the government last August on meeting a manifesto commitment to have cameras present in all areas where there are animals present in slaughterhouses. Official Veterinarians should have unrestricted access to footage to reassure consumers that high welfare standards are being effectively enforced.
All slaughterhouses will be required to comply in full by 5 November, following an adjustment period of six months to enable businesses to install a suitable CCTV system.
