When it comes to lamb production, the welfare of the rams involved is often overlooked. Gill Harris discusses a new report that calls for rams to get the attention they deserve

THE average cost of a ram at this year’s Kelso Ram Sales was just over £700, and total sales topped £3 million. Yet, despite the value of these animals, their welfare is often not a top priority. Growing concern about rams’ short working lives has led two independent sheep consultants, Lesley Stubbings and Kate Phillips, to look at their welfare in more detail.
