FSA hits back on ‘dirty meat’ claims

THE Food Standards Agency (FSA) has insisted it has a robust system of inspection for the meat industry, following an investigation that found hygiene failures in a quarter of slaughterhouses.

The investigation, carried out by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, analysed the most recent audit reports from official FSA inspections of 323 abattoirs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and found that 86 did not meet the required food safety benchmark.
