MPs support calls to improve the welfare of racing greyhounds

ANIMAL welfare organisations and MPs came together last week to call on the Government to improve the welfare of racing greyhounds in the UK.

Nineteen MPs attended a drop-in session at the House of Commons on January 17, hosted by Angela Smith, the Labour MP for Penistone and Stockbridge and a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) select committee, which conducted an inquiry into racing greyhound welfare last year (VR, March 5, 2016, vol 178, p 228). Also in attendance were representatives of the welfare organisations belonging to the Greyhound Forum, who told MPs of their disappointment over a lack of action to amend the Welfare of Racing Greyhounds Regulations 2010.
