THE Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) in Northern Ireland announced on January 20 that the avian influenza prevention zone originally declared in the country on December 23, 2016, had been extended until March 16. DAERA says that the extension of the zone is a result of continuing findings of H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, and the ongoing risk of an outbreak in Northern Ireland.
