IN tribute to Thomas William Anthony Little (VR, November 19, 2016, vol 179, p 522), JW, KM and GD write: Tony Little was director of the Central Veterinary Laboratory Weybridge (CVL) from 1990 until 2000, a period which not only encompassed the conversion of the laboratory from an integral part of the State Veterinary Service to a freestanding agency, but also when it was faced with the immense challenge of dealing with the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic.

Tony was born in Brough, in the former county of Westmorland, to a father who was a journalist and a mother who was a teacher. He attended Dame Allen's School in Newcastle before going on to the ‘Dick Vet’ College in Edinburgh where he qualified as a veterinary surgeon in 1963. …
