Brachycephalic dogs: BVA calls for revised breed standards

THE BVA is calling for the breed standards for brachycephalic dogs to be revised to include evidence-based limits on physical features such as muzzle length.

The call follows the publication of a genetic assessment of the English bulldog by a team of researchers in the USA, which found that the breed has very low genetic diversity as a result of a small founder population and artificial genetic bottlenecks resulting from highly focused selection for specific physical traits.
