ON May 6, 2016, Christopher Michael Wathes, BSc, PhD, FIAgrE, OBE, emeritus professor of animal welfare, Royal Veterinary College, and former chairman of the Farm Animal Welfare Council.

His friends and colleagues write: Christopher Wathes, emeritus professor of the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), tragically passed away in May this year. Christopher was professor of animal welfare at the RVC from 2005 until his retirement in 2013, during which time he established the RVC's Centre for Animal Welfare.

Throughout his career, Christopher was an outstanding, dedicated and uncompromising scientist who always championed the welfare of animals. He was a man who acted on evidence and would never accept ill-informed opinion or hearsay.
