Jim Parkins and Joe Dudley write: Colleagues and friends in the UK and North America were profoundly saddened to learn of the recent death of Roger Breeze after a courageous fight with cancer. He was a remarkable character who pursued an extraordinarily diverse career. To many, he led the world into the modern era of biodefence and biosecurity. He was a distinguished veterinary research scientist and biosecurity expert who supported international efforts for anticipating and responding to emerging risks and threats from biological agents and emerging diseases. He was a perceptive advocate for the recognition of the benefits and the significant potential security threats presented by the emerging fields of molecular biology and genetic engineering.
