LIPID infusion is used in veterinary medicine in the management of poisoning from lipophilic compounds such as ivermectin and permethrin.

The exact mechanism of action is unknown but the lipid is thought to act as a ‘shuttle’, resulting in redistribution of the toxic compound away from target sites to other organs. The lipid may also provide an energy source to cells and act as an inotrope improving cardiovascular performance.
