FURTHER outbreaks of avian influenza in France since December last year have not increased the risk to the UK, according to the latest assessment of the outbreak by Defra's International Disease Monitoring (IDM) team.
The assessment, published on February 18, reports that, by that date, 72 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), caused by the H5N1, H5N2 and H5N9 strains of the virus, had been detected. In addition, seven outbreaks of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI), caused by the H5N2 and H5N3 strains, had been reported.
