European Medicines Agency to review guidance on colistin use in animals

THE European Medicines Agency (EMA) has been asked by the European Commission to update its advice on the use of colistin in animals. The request follows the discovery of a gene, mcr-1, which causes bacteria to become resistant to colistin, a polymixin antibiotic which is used as a ‘last resort’ antibiotic to treat certain bacterial infections in people.
