Bluetongue: Defra predicts risk level will start to increase

‘OUR risk level remains the same; however, the weather is starting to improve and as daily average temperatures increase in mainland France and the UK, so our risk level will start to increase.’

So says Defra's International Disease Monitoring (IDM) team in its most recent assessment of the ongoing outbreaks of serotype 8 of the bluetongue virus (BTV-8) in France. The assessment, available at www.gov.uk/government/publications/bluetongue-virus-btv-8-in-france, was published on June 8 and notes that, while the restriction zones in France have not changed in coverage, all of the ‘seasonally free’ zones have been revoked.
