Defra moves to replace statutory animal welfare codes

DEFRA is to begin working with the livestock industry to develop species-specific guidance on how to comply with farm animal welfare legislation. The guidance will replace statutory codes of recommendations for welfare in each livestock sector.

The move towards industry-led guidance on welfare follows a consultation held by the Government in 2013, which sought views on reforming the farm animal welfare codes in England. The consultation aimed to check that the principle of moving from statutory farm animal welfare codes to non-statutory guidance drafted by the industry met both the Government's commitment to improved standards of animal welfare and the practical needs of farmers.
