MP calls for review of tick treatment requirements for travelling dogs

THE Pet Passport scheme is flawed and tick treatment requirements for dogs travelling to the UK need to be reviewed.

So says Roger Gale, Conservative MP for North Thanet and patron of the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation.

Following the recent confirmation of babesiosis in dogs in Essex that had not travelled abroad (VR, February 13, 2016, vol 178, p 172; March 5, 2016, vol 178, p 243; March 26, 2016, vol 178, p 323), Sir Roger tabled two parliamentary questions asking, first, what steps Defra was taking to prevent the disease spreading and to deter the impact of infected animals from mainland Europe carrying tickborne viruses and, secondly, to ask what assessment had been made of the potential benefits of reintroducing tick treatment …
