ON January 21, 2016, Betty Sylvia Sugden (née Wills), MRCVS, of Flat 3, Geffreys House, London Road, Hook, Hampshire. Mrs Sugden qualified from London in 1944.

Colin Skinner writes: Betty Sugden was born in Bristol on December 17, 1919. She attended Redland High School until July 26, 1938. Her cousin Archie McDiarmid, who was three years her senior, had enrolled at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh and encouraged her to become a veterinary surgeon. She started at the Royal Veterinary College, London on October 3, 1938. During her time at the RVC she met her future husband, Richard (Dick) Sugden, who had also enrolled at the RVC, but who left after war broke out in 1939 to join the RAF as a pilot, and who never went back to complete his studies. Dick and Betty were married on April 10, 1943, and a son, Richard, was born in February 1947.

Betty qualified as an MRCVS on July 4, 1944, and then worked for William Watson who ran a mixed practice at Thornbury. After the birth of Richard …
