THIS month sees the 50th anniversary of the Brambell Report, a landmark in animal welfare and the foundation of the ‘Five Freedoms’, which are still widely referred to today (Webster 2005). In my recent Wooldridge memorial lecture at the BVA Congress, I outlined a case for the veterinary profession to revisit these principles, as they apply to companion animals, in the light of changes in animal welfare science over the intervening half century.
