THE finding of a new gene conferring resistance to the antibiotic colistin in bacteria from pigs and people in China is ‘disturbing and disappointing’, according to the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA).

RUMA was invited to comment on an article in Lancet Infectious Diseases (November 18, 2015, doi: 10.1016/S1473-3099(15)00424-7), which reported the emergence of a plasmid-mediated polymyxin resistance mechanism, named MCR-1, in Enterobacteriaceae.
