ON September 5, 2015 William Leslie Porter, BVMS, FRCVS, of Stanton, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Mr Porter qualified from Glasgow in 1963.

Elizabeth Berry writes: The veterinary profession has its fair share of exceptional and talented individuals, and William Leslie Porter was one of them. In the brief time that I had the privilege to work with him, both his knowledge and attitude were an inspiration and he was added to the list of those who have mentored me in my career.

Les, as he always introduced himself, grew up in the west of Scotland. This enabled him to have a variety of interests, often focused on a challenge or speed and with an element of risk. He bought his own pony as a teenager, having done odd jobs to pay for it. He could as easily have become an engineer; however, perhaps Molly the pony and some parental persuasion meant that the veterinary profession gained from his skills.
