IN tribute to Peter Edward Gawne (VR, August 22/29, 2015, vol 177, p 205), Mark Carpenter and David Chennells write: As a friend said: ‘In life everyone should know at least one person like Peter Gawne’; and this comment alone introduces one to this colourful, effervescent character with an infectious sense of humour and a permanent smile.

Peter was born on October 3, 1949, in Richmond, Surrey, but grew up in south Buckinghamshire. He was educated at Bradfield College, and then went on to read zoology at Wadham College, Oxford. During his final year he decided that he wanted to become a vet, and so he applied for and gained a place at Queens' College, Cambridge, to embark on a further five years of study. Eight years of university life presented no challenge for Peter, neither academically nor socially, and witnesses confirm that he enjoyed them to the full.
