IN tribute to Raymond Leslie Butcher (VR, February 7, 2015, vol 176, p 151) Polly Taylor, David Chennells, John Williams and Charlie Gruchy write: The Cambridge class of 1976 was very privileged to have Ray Butcher as one of its members.

In writing such tributes it is easy to use superlatives; for Ray this is entirely justified. He was an outstanding personality, universally liked and respected, a friend to and a friend of everyone. He had a well-developed and infectious sense of humour and was always cheerful and smiling.
