ON January 1, 2015, Joseph Steven Russell, BVMS, DVSM, MRCVS, of 18 Allan Water Walk, Allan Water, Bridge of Allan, Stirling. Mr Russell qualified from Glasgow in 1958.

Ian Aitken and Alasdair MacPherson write: Steve Russell was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on March 3, 1933. His father was the Labour Lord Provost of Hamilton for many years.

Educated at Hamilton Academy, Steve displayed more than ordinary gifts for sport and music. He was an excellent footballer, gaining two youth (under 18) caps for Scotland and being signed as a professional for Hamilton Academical Football Club, which at the time was a second division team. He had a marvellous singing voice and his music teacher at school offered to get him an audition at the Royal Academy of Music in London but Steve turned down the offer as it was his goal to be a veterinary surgeon.

He gained a place at the University of Glasgow's School of Veterinary Medicine in 1951. Although he enjoyed football training, he resigned …
