ALMOST 31 million birds have been affected by outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the USA since December last year, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The first case in poultry was confirmed on December 19, 2014, in a small backyard flock of 130 mixed poultry in Oregon. The causative virus in this case was identified as H5N8. On January 3, 2015, an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza was confirmed in a backyard flock of 140 mixed poultry in Washington state.
