THE RCVS presented its honours and awards during RCVS Day, as follows.

Queen's Medal

The Queen's Medal is a new honour that will be awarded to veterinary surgeons for a lifetime's contribution to the profession and their dedication to working above and beyond the call of duty in the fields of veterinary medicine or science, or related areas. It is the highest honour that the College can bestow.

Mr D. Thompson

Des Thompson, of Belfast, is to be the first recipient of the Queen's Medal. During RCVS Day, he was presented with a scroll to mark this and will receive the medal itself from the Queen at Buckingham Palace later this year.

Mr Thompson was described by the President as a veterinary surgeon who had dedicated decades to the profession. He had served as president of the RCVS, the British Small Animal Veterinary Association, the Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons and the Northern Ireland Veterinary Association, among other organisations. He had been chairman of Veterinary Northern Ireland, a trustee of the RCVS Trust (now RCVS Knowledge) and a council member of the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe.

The President told the meeting that Mr Thompson had actually been nominated twice for the award. ‘What is clear from both of his nominations is the respect and admiration that the veterinary community in Northern Ireland, and beyond, has for him and his commitment to representing the interests of the profession, as demonstrated by his prodigious number of past-presidencies as well as the number of professional awards he has to his name.’

Honorary fellows

Honorary fellowship by election recognises members ‘who have far exceeded expectation in their contribution to the profession, through special eminence and service to the cause of veterinary science’. Those elected this year were Andrew Holliman, Maxwell Murray and Donald Rutty.
