FAO warns of new strain of avian influenza virus

THE Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is warning that a recently emerged strain of avian influenza virus is posing a new threat to animal health and livelihoods in south-east Asia.

The influenza A (H5N6) virus was first reported in poultry by the authorities in China in April this year. It has since been detected in poultry in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Vietnam.
