Mixed response to EC's proposals on veterinary medicines

THE Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) has broadly welcomed the European Commission's recently published proposals for new legislation on veterinary medicines and medicated feed, but says that it is disappointed that they do not include more significant steps towards a single EU market for veterinary medicines.

The Commission's proposals, which were adopted on September 10 (VR, September 20, 2014, vol 175, p 262), aim to improve the availability of veterinary medicines, but the FVE believes that the current situation of a European Union divided into national markets will largely remain. ‘Situations wherein the same medicine is allowed to be used in certain countries and not in others are likely to stay unchanged,’ it says, adding …
