THE BVA has reiterated its support for a second year of pilot badger culls in England after Elizabeth Truss, the Secretary of State at Defra, announced in Parliament last week that the culling operations had started in Somerset and Gloucestershire as part of the Government's comprehensive strategy for controlling bovine TB. At the same time, the BVA renewed its call for the Secretary of State to put in place an independent analysis of the culls to reassure the wider public.
The terms under which the culls will conducted were set out in letters of authorisation issued by Natural England in August (VR, September 6, 2014, vol 175 p 211). …
